Unregistered,
It appears that you have never posted yet in our forums. Why dont you introduce yourself in the "Faces Behind The Wheel" Thread in the Photo's section!
I had to drive a Mazda 3 the other day from Kitchener to Georgetown, so I thought I would give a few brief impressions. First of all, the Rabbit is neater and less gadgety, and also seems a little more modern. I thought also that the Rabbit's dash controls were simpler and more intuitive, especially the stereo.
The Mazda was peppy and spirited to drive. I thought they did a good job on both the engine and gearbox. For some reason my Rabbit's gearbox is still a bit clunky. The gearbox on my Mk3 Golf was very smooth.
I thought the Mazda was a pretty decent car and a good value, but, the Rabbit feels more solid and refined. Some things like the squirter nozzles on the hood of the Mazda seemed very old fashioned. The Mazda is not as wide as the Rabbit either. All in all I thought the Mazda was good, but, the Rabbit was better!
I was between a Mazda 6 vs the Rabbit. For the value, the Rabbit was way better. But I cannot agree with you more about the dash controls.. My sister has one, Its great to drive long distances in, but seems a little domestic. The Rabbit seems like it rides on rails, and feels European. And that's what I like.
But yes I agree. There have been a couple of Mazda 3's in my family so I have had my share of driving them. Great car, but the Rabbit is better. Just has that extra refinement that I thought was totally work the extra money.
